Plan Your Project
If you’re going to tackle Christmas decorating on your own, you probably already have a vision of what you want your property to look like. Make sure to take note of your roof line, any bushes or trees that would look great with lights, and any areas of your home that could use greenery (garland on handrails or some wreaths in your windows). It is also important to make sure you have power where you will need it.

Purchase Your Decorations
After you have a layout you are excited about, start making a list of all the items you will need. You should consider the type of light that will work best for the application. An example would be larger C-9 bulbs on the roof line and some LED mini-lights to wrap a tree or drape a bush. It is also important to consider how you will fasten the decorations in each application so that you can enjoy your hard work all season long. If you confirmed power sources during planning, make sure to consider any extension cords or timers you will need as well.
Expert Tip – If you are using decorations, you already own, make sure to test everything before you install! You have already taken on a big project – there is no need to have to do it twice because the lights you put up are no longer working!
Safety
Before you start installation, confirm everything can be done safely. No one wants to spend the holiday season injured, so be sure to think about moving heavy ladders and decorations. Working from ladders is very dangerous. Consider reviewing some safety information and proper uses for the ladders you have. If you are using “lit” decorations, be sure you are comfortable with any electrical portion of the work as well.
Expert Tip – It is always best to work with someone else when you are doing any ladder work. It is safer and a great way to spend some of this time with loved ones!
Start the Install
Once you are comfortable with your safety measures, start putting up your decorations! Take your time so that you can get everything done right the first time. It is important that everything is properly secured so that the decorations don’t come down before the season is over. Confirm you are satisfied with the work area you are in before moving on so that you do not have to go back.
Expert Tip – Make sure any “lit” décor is installed so that the male power end is closest to the power source.
Enjoy
Once you are done with installation, you should be able to sit back and enjoy your hard work with your loved ones.
Expert Tip – Newer LED technology allows most small to medium installations to be powered by a single 120V outlet. You can install a timer so that your lights automatically turn on and off every evening, so you don’t have to go outside to plug them in and out every night!
Takedown
Once the holidays are winding down, it is time to take down the decorations. This is a very important step to set you up for success next season. Take good notes and pictures of the work you did and any sort of “problem” you had to solve. This step will prevent you from having to reinvent the wheel next year!
Expert Tip – Label everything and store the items in a single location so you know where all your decorations are the next year.
We hope some of these basic tips help you have a successful installation and that you will be able to enjoy your work throughout the season.
